This is an early 20th century example of the small figures carved for general well-being among the Lulua people of D.R.Congo, Central Africa. Monumental in presence, it is a meager 6 3/8" L x 1.50"W. The figure is carved from a light weight, yet tight-grained wood section, hollow through its core, and showing remnants of an application of white and reddish organic pigments. EX private NYC collection, EX James Willis Gallery, San Fran CA, sold in 1990.
